First solid food

We're back from a fantastic Christmas trip to Connecticut and I'll be making posts with details from our trip soon. For now, Claire and Nina have an important moment to share with you...their first solid food eating experience! The girls are 6 1/2 months old now and have been ready for solids for a few weeks. I wanted to wait until we returned from vacation, so the day we got back I strapped the little ones into their highchairs, put on their fancy new bibs (thanks Grandma Karen!) and made a thin mushy soup with baby rice cereal and formula (gruel, as Jason calls it).

The girls did a great job. I cut the video a bit to save you from 10+ minutes of baby eating, but on the highlights you can see the firsts tastes and funny confused expressions. A few bites later, Claire started playing with the spoon and putting it into her own mouth. After a bit more practice, the girls were smiling, laughing, and (occasionally) eating. We'll continue with this rice gruel once a day for a few more days and then we'll probably start banana.

Solid foods: yay! bebes did a great job on their first try; when is it ok to introduce escargots and oysters?
I am looking forward to feeding the bebes: it should be fun and messy, of course!

Wow! They look so tiny in those giant chairs!

Please ignore if you know all this already. Rice cereal can constipate some kids. It's not a serious problem, but may suggest delaying bananas which constipate most kids. If you are making your own, you can mix bananas with avocados, since the latter are super high in fiber. You can also follow up with a veggie like peas or carrots to get the mail moving. Or just go back to formula for a bit.

I am lazy and mostly buy jars, but it is not too hard to make your own: heat, blend, sieve, etc.

They look like great eaters! Have fun!

Thanks so much for the advice! I can see how introducing two of the infamous BRAT foods back to back could be tough on the little ones. I went to sweet potato first, which was pretty fun.
