15 week ultrasound...girls (?)

We just got back from our 15-week ultrasound and the bebes look great! We started by looking at "A" (left pics) who was squirming around madly. She (?) kept wiggling about and doing somersaults. We didn't know why until we saw B (right pics). At the last ultrasound, bebe A was caught punching B square in the face and now it looks like B is having her (?) revenge. B was gently floating, laying back, and violently kicking poor A in the head. This is going to be an interesting pair!

The bebes look great size-wise and thanks to some nice positioning on the part of B, the technician was able to see what looked like a labia. Although it's still early and things might look different in a couple weeks, the bebes now look like they're girls!

While we were at the hospital, we were also offered the chance to join a clinical trial. Stanford's a research hospital and they're the site of tons of cutting-edge research. Since our twins are monochorionic, which is pretty rare, they qualify for this study. Apparently, monochorionic twins (this is the whole placenta-sharing thing that only happens for identicals) are at higher risk for neurological abnormalities and through this study, the docs are trying to figure out if fetal MRI can detect these problems before birth. This would involve getting an MRI of the bebes around 30 weeks or so (or earlier if they develop some type of problem) and an echocardiogram. Specialists then look at the scans and share the results and the scans with us. Since MRI and echos don't put me or the fetuses (feti?) at risk, this is a great opportunity. We brought back all the forms and are looking them over now.

You were referred to as bebes in your Mommy's first entry. In French, bebe is always "masculin" so the fact that you may be little girls will not change that! It's always: "un" bebe (or in your case: "deux".)
I got to pat my own first bebe's little bump last week: loved it!
So, Woertink bebes, keep actively growing and have fun in there!

If they are little girls, it will be the first in a long time.. look how many boys are in our family on Jason's side! How exciting. I am so happy for you both! I enjoy your blogs and wish we were closer to share this first experience with you both! We love you!

I love reading your comments, Julia. Your wonderful sense of humor (and Jason's) will surely be passed on to the bebes, I hope! How wonderful for your children to be able to have access to these writings when they are old enough to understand their meaning! Please keep these up, I love them!
